What is Twitter?

Twitter is a social networking and micro blogging service allowing users to update their follower base with news, their status, opinions, and links in 140 characters or less.

At one time an obscure Internet novelty, Twitter now enjoys mainstream attention with over 90+ million unique users – establishing Twitter as a global information provider.

Twitter's success comes from its ability to connect people to news, ideas, and opinions in a way no other social networking platform has been able to.

Twitter is quickly becoming the first site people visit when they want to know what is happening – right now.

Why STL Tweets? Why not just Twitter?

We love Twitter. We have it on our desktops, our phones. We take it out to dinner and on dates, and without it, we couldn’t have created STL Tweets.

STL Tweets works by taking the features, functionality, and everything that is great about Twitter and puts a local spin on it.

We are your guide, forging a path through the clutter to deliver the news, opinions, and events that matter to St. Louis.

Do I need to have a Twitter account to use STL Tweets?

Nope. We designed STL Tweets to reach the St. Louis Twitter community, as well as non-Twitter users who are still looking for the same real-time news, happenings, and opinions.

Although you may be prompted at times to log in or create a Twitter account to tweet or 'retweet' content (links, opinions, etc.), you can still access all of STL Tweets without a Twitter account.

Why are my tweets not showing up in the tweet stream or a particular category?

STL Tweets pulls tweets from Twitter and is fully dependant on the tweets Twitter provides us. Sometimes, this is not a comprehensive feed. Sometimes the Fail Whale intervenes.

However, there are a few things you can do to make sure your tweets have a better chance of appearing on STL Tweets:

  1. 1. Verify the following attributes are set in your Twitter account ‘Settings’
    • Location is set to: St. Louis, MO.
    • ‘Enable geotagging’ check box is ‘ON’
    • ‘Protect my tweets’ check box is ‘OFF’
  2. 2. Become an accepted member of the STL Tweet twitterati. Suggest Someone
  3. 3. Each Category is associated with a #hashtag. Apply that particular #hashtag to your tweet and it has a good chance of appearing within the category feed.

Why are certain pieces of content being replaced with *@#! ?

STL Tweets masks obscenities and other vulgar terms using a SafeView method, which is turned ‘On’ by default. Any tweet or link content containing designated obscenities will be masked with the “*@#!” characters. Furthermore, any links which contain obscenities will not function unless SafeView is turned ‘Off’. SafeView can easily be turned off by clicking on the SafeView link in the top navigation menu.
